He further highlighted comments from project representatives stating that the shooting range and restaurant operations would function independently and that the project would remain subject to extensive state and federal safety requirements before opening.
Questions Raised About Statements Regarding Redevelopment Projects
Brilliant also challenged statements made in the mayor’s letter regarding redevelopment projects in Toms River.
One issue involved references to the long-discussed Meridia redevelopment proposal. Brilliant argued that descriptions of the project as a “10-story tower” were inaccurate, noting that the proposal involved a six-story mixed-use redevelopment project.
He further discussed court rulings related to the redevelopment process, arguing that previous township actions attempting to terminate redevelopment designations had been overturned and that certain redevelopment proposals remain active components of ongoing affordable housing discussions.
Review of Planning Board Approvals
The podcast also examined a January 2026 planning board approval involving approximately 150 residential units and commercial space.
Brilliant acknowledged that portions of the site had received approvals under previous administrations but argued that modifications to the proposal—including changes from self-storage uses to retail and office space—required a new planning board review and approval process.
As a result, he maintained that the approval occurred during the current administration regardless of earlier approvals associated with the property.
